I am considering working in Abu Dharbi on a single status basis. Can any give some indication of monthly living costs, assuming that I will cook most meals myself, have the occassional beer etc.

I've just come back from AUH after a year there.

I stayed in a hotel apartment and paid AED 9,000 a month.

Your own 2 (maybe 3) bedroom apartment will cost you between AED 60,000 and 120,000 a year depending on where it is and how big etc.

Parking is a nightmare. There just isn't anywhere to park and everyone uses taxis which are like flies. You can go virtually anywhere in the city for < AED5.

Food is cheap and usually very good. There are plenty of local grocers selling fresh vegetables but most expats shop at Carrefour (Marina Mall) which is a bit more expensive but with more variety.

Don't forget to visit Ally Pally!!

Good luck

I have a friend who lives in Dubai, so this is may not be 100% true for Abu Dharbi. Basically if you live a reasonably westernised lifestyle it costs quite a bit more than the UK, he pays £8000 per year rent on a fancy bedsit. If you live like an unskilled worker with all the Indians and Filipino's who work there then you can scrape by for peanuts (a small house in these areas sells for £20,000).
(If you are from the USA £1=$2.)

Generally studio apartment rents vary between 1500-1800 USD, fooding cost would be another 1000 USD, plus entertainment 500 USD a month. Other expenses such as electricity, bills etc 500 USD. Take a estimate of 4000 USD minimum.

Hey .. take a look at www.expatmum.com .. a forum ran by Moms in the UAE, but don't let it put you off as it has a whole host of info relating to living and working in the Emirates .. There's also a side-site now to it .. i think www.expatbloke.com or something .. you're sure to find a link to it on the main one .. If you don't find the info you need, you can post a question and rest assured, someone will help you out!!

Happy hunting and Good Luck if you decide to take the position (I live in DXB .. UK Expat!)
