the name Maria reminds me of the sound of music, in which the maria in there is a nun, hence with god.
the name maria is generally a variation of the name mary (as mentioned by another person who answered). as for the association of mary to where, most of us can all say that the name is associated with god, jesus, christianity, all to do with religion and god (jesus specifically). you can do a further research (if you are really into finding the super answer for your question) in searching name meanings on google or yahoo. but be warned that websites may have different 'views'/'aspects' hence some answers may not match others. =)
