I'm giving you two useful quotes, I have also included the source.
As you will see below Maria is another form of Mary. In the biblical tradition she is the mother of Jesus.
MARIA
Latinate form of MARY. This was the name of several queens of Portugal. It was also borne by the 18th-century Habsburg queen Maria Theresa, whose inheritance of the domains of her father, the Holy Roman Emperor Charles VI, began the War of the Austrian Succession
MARY
Usual English form of Maria, which was the Latin form of the New Testament Greek names Μαριαμ (Mariam) or Μαρια (Maria) (the spellings are interchangeable), which were from the Hebrew name מִרְיָם (Miryam). The meaning is not known for certain, but there are several theories including "sea of bitterness", "rebelliousness", and "wished for child". However it was most likely originally an Egyptian name, perhaps derived in part from mry "beloved" or mr "love". This is the name of several New Testament characters, most importantly Mary the virgin mother of Jesus, and Mary Magdalene. Two queens of England have had this name, as well as a Queen of Scotland, Mary Queen of Scots.

the name Maria reminds me of the sound of music, in which the maria in there is a nun, hence with god.
the name maria is generally a variation of the name mary (as mentioned by another person who answered). as for the association of mary to where, most of us can all say that the name is associated with god, jesus, christianity, all to do with religion and god (jesus specifically). you can do a further research (if you are really into finding the super answer for your question) in searching name meanings on google or yahoo. but be warned that websites may have different 'views'/'aspects' hence some answers may not match others. =)

Hey Babe
In Hermetic Kabbalah, Maria is the waters, the seas (natura naturante; virginal and fertile ) Ruah-Elohim (the spirit of God) would go over by
Maria means of the sea..think about Latin mare maris (sea) and then you have French (mer) Spanish (mar)....
In Hebrew, it means "wished-for child; rebellion"; or, again the association with sea: sea of bitterness."

The association today is obviously Christian.

It associates with Mary. If the derivation is Mari then it refers to the sea.
