You should always have a full stomach when studying - it helps you concentrate more. Many people study in different ways, so it all depends on what you're comfortable with. Must you have complete silence, or is some noise in the background (tv or music) okay? Must you study alone, or in a group? I think it's easier to study with friends because everyone can help each other understand better, and it can be fun. Flash cards also work well. Have someone quiz you. Just try a bunch of these methods and see what works for you.

Good luck!

have a quiet, well lit space that is not too cold, or hot. Get a nice sturdy chair, and have a clean space, desk or table top will do just fine. If nothing else works, try buying some new school supplies. There's just something about new pencils and paper that make you want to get down and study. Also, and this may be hard, you may have to turn off the tv/computer/stereo. Some people are able to study while all this is going on, but most people keep checking their email or are too easily distracted by the other media. Most important, and this is crucial, block some time out for your studies. This means no phone calls or distractions, just you and your work. After 1 or 2 hours, take a break. You'll be surprised how much you can get done if you eliminate the distractions and get down to work.

Choose a quiet location where other people are also studying quietly. Avoid distractions and temptations to distract yourself. The library is an excellent place, just stay far away from the children's section. If you do not have siblings that are near your age, ask a friend to be a study buddy. Choose a location in your house that has very low traffic. For example, my daughter studies at our formal dining room table. She cannot see or hear a TV from her location. She and some friends sit at the table and do homework & study. As long as everyone is doing homework or reading, no one feels as if they are missing activities. They all have made a pact that if someone starts distracting, the others will remind him/her.

My son had trouble staying on task while he studied. He would get distracted & daydream about going out & shooting baskets or having a snack, etc. We decided it'd be easier to commit an hour to study if we set an alarm clock to go off after 45 minutes. Then he'd stop studying and go outside & shoot a few baskets, or go watch a little TV, or have a snack...the only rule was that he had to do something that got him out of the room he had been in. He did much better that way. He'd do 45 minutes studying, then take 15 minutes' break.

Having a well-lit desk to work at and a comfortable chair to sit in. A nice quiet environment is helpful as well, but most importantly you need to be in the proper stae of mind beforehand so you are not distracted by thoughts of "did I take the trash out?" "When was I supposed to meet up with what's his name?" "I'm feeling a bit hungry".... be sure you are ready for studying before sitting down to start.

I know that most people will say that a quiet, uncluttered space is one of the most important factors. In my teaching and tutoring career, I find that this is just not true. I believe most adults succeed with this environment, and "A" personality (text-book learners) do best with a clear, quiet space. However, there are many types of learners. Some people need to eliminate the distractions of their life by listening to loud music. I am not one of these people, but I have seen restless kids absolutely focus on their task if they can be allowed to have headphones on. It quiets their own mind and eliminates distractions from the laundry, phone, siblings, etc.
