I've been there, lived there and have been exposed to their culture for years. They're a harmonious, conforming society. They're polite (at least most are), they like the western culture and learning English is mandatory from junior high and on (it could even be from elementary school nowadays).
In contrast to our society, where people think that they 'deserve' something from their country, from their government and sue franchise restaurants because they "spilled hot coffee" and burned themselves, individuals in Japan take responsibility for their faults, flaws and failures. They rarely run to the court to sue, they solve problems on their own. They treasure family, and children usually live with their parents well after age 18. Taking care of your parents, grandparents is something that they value. You never hear kids say things like "I can't wait until I'm 18 and I can get out of this home."
What I dislike...they're conformists. It is difficult for them to "speak up", "stand out", "say what you're REALLY feeling and thinking". I think that is something that is important to do at times (to a degree).
I like their culture. I'm a mix of their culture and american culture and see both pros and cons.

my mother did. She said she liked it and the people were very nice. But the food was so "different". She could hardly eat anything at all. It's not like Benihana at all
