A medical diagnosis is specifically a disease and its process and so on. While a Nursing diagnosis is related to the everyday ongoing care of a patient. It is usually related to educating the patient about their condition, help them cope with it, safety measures important for the patient and basic overall everyday care. The two have the same root, as in they are relate to the patient and the disease process, but each has its own different purpose.

A medical diagnosis defines the specific illness or injury the patient has and nothing more. For example-- the medical diagnosis for a 62 year old patient presenting with a broken ankle is broken ankle.
A nursing diagnosis, on the other hand, looks beyond the immediate presenting medical problem and takes a more holistic (or total person) look at the patient in light of the presenting problem.
Taking the same "broken ankle" medical diagnosis given as an example above, the nursing diagnoses for that particular patient might include the following:
1) Alteration in mobility, decreased, secondary to broken ankle
2) Potential for infection related to cast-
3) Knowledge defecit secondary to use of crutchesd and or cast care
4) Self care defecits, dressing, hygiene, nutrition, secondary to limited mobility....
and so on...
And then nursing care plans would address each problem or potential problem in order to provide the patient and family with education and needed care to prevent complications, address home care needs, arrange for ancillary services as needed, and facillitate optimal patient outcome.

Nursing Diagnosis deals with what process a Nurse can provide to make the health situation better. Such as pain, poor skin condition,
social spiritual, risk management and reduction...Nurses are more technicians with the process of wellness.
Medical Diagnosis is simply looking at a physical problem/injury/etc., and diagnosing what has occured and how to fix it. It is the nuts and bolts of making things physically better. Including medication and treatment.
