Making it look good depends on the compression type (Jpeg or Gif) and how much compression you use (low quality vs high). For black and white, I'd go with a GIF probably set to medium quality.

Be sure the overall size of the image is scaled down. It should be 72 DPI. No one image should be bigger than the screen size.... don't post images that are 2000 pixels wide. 1024x768 is a good average size of your viewer's screens. You don't want someone with an older computer/monitor having to scroll over and over to see the whole thing.
