Aside from the Integrated graphics that share your systems RAM a graphics card will have it's own so it can render the graphics without hogging system resources. PCI cards are okay, but AGP (advanced graphics protocol are better. AGP can be used in almost any system built today. For the costs of upgrading your graphics card go to http://www.pricewatch.com I have bought tons of stuff thru their vendors and have never had a bad experience yet.

Okay let me make this simple
1. Graphics card is basically a card to do graphics.
2. Advantage is that it does graphics better than having the system itself do them, making games and video look better and relieving stress on the system. Disadvantage is that it does cost money.
3. Depends, anywhere from $50 to $400.
If you want more detail, drop me an e-mail.

Also, to Crown PC, I like your answer but you seem to be forgetting PCI Express, as it is quickly replacing AGP

The advantage is that you get more power for your graphic. If you choose the PCI-E option, you will get a DVI which allow you to connect your pc to the TV. The disavantage is that you have to watch how much they consumes on energy using watts and +12v not to mention the system requirement are demanding system memory. Don't ask me why but I tend to make sure I have enough. By not giving enough power from the power supply is asking for a burn out that will damages your motherboard.

Some graphic cards are tend to be power thirsty depending on the specification and size.

Anything half of the video card size is asking that particular amount of system memory. 256mb video card is asking for 128mb system memory. A 128mb video card are asking for 64mb system memory.

a graphics card is a display hardware that is required for the monitor and the better it is the more things you can see.
a better understanding if your graphics card is 8bit it is low definition maybe you can see 256 colours but if it is a High definition just take a look at HD TVs
