just one of those things that happens unfortunately (didn;t happen to me though). You are pushing hard to get the baby out and are using the same muscles that you use to poo. The inevitable sometimes happens!

Some women, poo right before birth and that is your bodys way of getting rid of any toxins. If you poo during it could be the pushing, but most women I know, did not poo during the labor, just before they go in. Some hospitals if they know you are in labor will give you something to make you poo, so you won't during the actual pushing!

actually pooing during birth is rare unless ur induced or premature. nature prepares ur body for birth, so up to a week before u give birth u may have diarrhoea or poo more than usual, this is to clean out ur system so u dont poo during the birth. also it enables u not 2 poo for several days after the birth, very good if u have had stitches.
i had 2 babies and never pooed, i had a strange diarrhoea a few days before giving birth and had stitches both times i gave birth. i then had several days after the births where i didnt need 2 poo. and trust me it's scary pooing when u have stitches!

I've never had a natural childbirth, but with my first son I tried to push, and when a woman is trying to push the baby out you have to push like your going to have a bowel movement. So i guess someone could really "poo" when giving birth. Hope that answers your question.

Nothing more than pressure from baby. You used to get 'cleaned out' in the good old days, but now it seems to be left to chance! My 2nd baby was slow at getting out but apparently the pressure from the baby emptying my bowels was what helped. Thankfully I didn't know I'd done it at the time. I was told later when the notes were being revised. Just as well - there was enough loss of dignity at the time without being aware of that too!!
Edit. uk girl2 - you're answers on the pregnancy and parenting questions are a bit monotenous. Why are you bothering??! Considering how you appear to hate children so much, you should stop acting like one.

Only because of all the pressure that's going on in that area, while giving birth. Also because sometimes while giving birth you are heavily sedated and you just have to poo and you can control yourself....when giving birth your in a very vulnerable stage.

When giving birth, in order for the baby to be delivered vaginally it is necessary to relax all the Kagel muscles and sphincter muscles. The anus is a sphincter. There is a great deal of pressure and on top of that, the mother must push. Inevitably, any matter in the rectum will be expelled during pushing. Normally, the mother is given an enema to reduce the amount of matter expelled. It is perfectly natural and happens to all women who give birth vaginally.

The strain is a big part of it. Another big part of it is the fact that most women request some sort of painkiller in the form of a numbing agent (such as an epidural). This prevents them from being able to differentiate between muscle groups when pushing out the baby and it can occur.
Some women either request or are given an enema short after labor onset to prevent this, but it really doesn't do any harm. And it isn't as common as you think.

It's actually caused by the size and pressure of the head coming out literally pushing everything out of your colon. Not a nice prospect but it's the last thing on your mind at the time to be honest and the midwives just get rid of it and carry on regardless.. they're seen much worse!
