This is a serious question so please can I have a serious answer: to all USA citizzens who own and keep a handgun on thier premises.

1) Why do you keep the handgun? Is it for protection in case someone breaks in to your property/is breaking the law nearby etc etc, sport?

2) Providing you are not a real gun enthuasist and just keep the weapon for protection, how often do you actually handle it?

3) How much would a NEW, bog-standard, no-frills handgun for home protection cost you on the High Street? Are we talking like $50 or $5000?

Thanks!

Sorry guys, didn't realise 'High Street' was only a British term! It just means main shopping area of any town or city, not somewhere tucked away in the middle of nowhere.

Protection and recreation. I go shooting at least once a month. Around $500 depending on the maker though

Yes I keep guns in my home. We have long arms which were sort of a collection , as they are rare and beautiful, some of them. Also for hunting. (which we havent done in years)
Handguns are kept for self defense, I also have a license to carry if I choose. My husband takes them out once in a while and checks/cleans them, but other than that they are out of sight and never used. What is the "High Street". All of the guns I own were purchased legally. If you are buying an illegal firearm then who knows what your getting. You could probably find some in the range of 1-500 dollars. I really don't know. Why not just go to a firearms dealer?

I keep guns for target shooting and self-defense. While I would go hunting if somebody invited me I don't think I would really get into it. Plus I have no place to store the meat if I killed something large like a deer. I have concealed carry permits from 4 states and carry a gun on me or in my car most of the time when I am out. The guns I carry I "handle" at least twice a day taking it out of and putting it back into my safe. The other guns every other weekend or so when I go to the range.

A standard semi-automatic from a name-brand company would run you about $500-600 You could get a decent revolver, or something like a Bersa Thunder .380 or Kel-tec for about half that. You can of course spend A LOT more if you want match or competition grade parts.

I have several firearms.

I have them for self-defense for my family, especially my kids. My kids are all "gun safe"; my son scored the highest in his NRA safety course, mostly composed of adults -- he was 12! After the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, only a fool would proclaim that "no one needs guns; the police will protect you."

Sadly, civilization is on the retreat worldwide. Those who are armed will survive. Those who are not, will not. Yes, the Wild West HAS returned...not my doing, but I'm certainly going to do something about it.

My pistol cost about US $550 including background check and firearm safety course.
