Complete stab in the dark here. Therapeutic liberalism could possibly mean discussing both sides of an argument, thus it has nothing to do with the political ideology.

Talk shows here in the UK thrive on it. Jeremy Kyle is particularly good at making people see the other person's argument. For example, an absent father, previously an alcoholic and/or drug addict, who may have been handy with his fists, or verbally abusive to his ex-partner, has cleaned up and wants to see his child, whom he hasn't seen since he/she was an infant. For argument's sake, the child is now five.

Mother has previously been terrified of her ex-partner's (the father of her child) abuse, and vehemently refuses to let the father see the child.

The host will obviously comfort the mother, and sympathise with her. He will then introduce the father, who may or may not be aggressive. If he is aggressive, the host will be more likely to side with the mother's feelings. If he has improved himself, the host will congratulate him. In either case, he will try and persuade the mother to let the father see the child, and will encourage the father to go through all proper procedures (e.g. family court etc.) in order to get access. He will however, warn the father, that if he screws up, that will be it, and the mother will probably withdraw the child from his life, permanently. The latter is true if the father is agressive.

has recently appeared on the subject of liberalism, many in defense, others in attack, some in bewilderment. This angst is not new, but there are some new things about it. It began in the 1960s at the very time liberalism seemed ascendant. But what appeared in defense, even self-examination, was really a redefinition, the emotional need to justify taking liberalism in a new direction for fear of its falling into anachronism, or worse, conservatism. Liberals had to make a decision to abrogate the historical principles of liberalism--a not always coherent and frequently self-contradictory body of ideas--in favor of a doctrine. The choice they faced was prompted in part by the convulsions of the sixties and the complete embrace of the only tactical principle of liberals, "No enemies to the left."
