Although this question is posted in the wrong forum, I kind of like it.

Why big dogs v small ones? There are a few factors:

1. Size of your home. If you live a medium (to large) house, you can own a big dog as there is ample space for it to roam around. Dogs need exercise, too small a house or apartment stifles them.

2. Purpose. Is your dog there for protection? Is your dog supposed to deal with trespassers and intruders? If so, then the advantages of having a big dog over a small one, is obvious. If for affection, like cuddling etc, then a small one is better.

3. Kids. Many owners forget this when buying, keeping dogs. If you have a baby or young kids at home, having a large dog isn't advisable. Instead of protecting your family, it may end up attacking your kid. This is because young children do not know how to treat a dog properly. They may be too rough and disturb it needlessly, especially during meals. Because the dog is bigger than your kid, he or she cannot suitably defend themselves during a sudden attack.

4. Excitability. Smaller dogs are more hyperactive and it usually demands more attention from you, for play and sometimes love. Bigger dogs tire more easily and do not need too much love or attention for vigourous activity.

5. Ego. This is more for man. A bigger dog gives a sense of machoism, a small one suggests timidity.

6. Taste. Certain breeds are naturally bigger whilst others the opposite. If you fancy a German Sheperd, then definitely, you'll have a big dog. If you like Cocker Spaniels, then you are going for a smaller one.

These are some of the factors, there is no right or wrong answer. Big or small, all dogs are special, if you love them.

I dont think having a lil dog makes my masculinity go down but I hate lil dogs b/c they are freakin annoying. I dont think dogs belong in the house and what good is having a lil dog living outside? So therefore I have a bigger dog that lives outside...

it depends upon whether you are keeping pets or livestock. I mean is your dog a co-worker so to speak or a fuzzy little toy. If your dog is for hunting or herding then a yappy little dust mop is not likely to be effective. Dogs are all bred to different spec's for different purposes.

It's a macho thing, like big trucks. But big dogs make big turds, and you have to deal with all their slobber, hair, and galloping around. There was a cool thing on Yahoo News about macho men who like little lap dogs.
