There are several factors that affect your speed. The primary is your ISP ad the load on their system. Second would be you internal house\building wiring. If it is your ISP you cannot do anything about that, and it is doubtful the will do anything about it.
I would try running a fresh cable between the modem and the service box where the service enters the building. If it solves your problem call the telco to replace the wiring or do it yourself.
There are two other options but they are rather expensive.
The first is install a external modem. This (in the old days) should give you about 10% to 15% increase in speed. If you are getting 40Kbps that will give you 6Kbps more @ 15%.
The second is dual (or what use to be referred to as Shotgun) modems with a dialup router*. This also means two internet accounts and two POTS (Plain Old Telephone Service) lines. The good thing about the router is is will drop and reconnect the second line depending on the requirements of your phone needs.

There are particularly some factors that impact your speed. the common is your ISP advert the load on their device. 2d could be you inner housebuilding wiring. despite if it is your ISP you may desire to now not do some thing approximately that, and that's doubtful the will do some thing approximately it. i might attempt working a clean cable between the modem and the service field the region the service enters the form. If it solves your situation call the telco to alter the wiring or do it your self. There are 2 distinctive innovations yet they're somewhat intense priced. the 1st is installation a outdoors modem. This (indoors the old days) would desire to desire to grant you approximately 10% to fifteen% strengthen in speed. in case you're commencing as much as be 40Kbps that provides you you with 6Kbps extra desirable @ 15%. the 2d is twin (or what use to be observed as Shotgun) modems with a dialup router*. This additionally skill 2 innovations superhighway debts and a pair of POTS (undeniable old telephone service) strains. the coolest component approximately the router is is will drop and reconnect the 2d line based on the factors of your telephone desires.

There are lots of things that can lower your connection speed like how far you live from the exchange, the quality of the wiring, if there is any "noise" on the line. You can ask your phone company to check it out but they don't normally want to help too much as they provide it for voice calls, not data transfer.
I have friends who are still on dial-up and I always recommend they look at http://www.onspeed.com and, at least, try it out in the 14 day money back guarantee period. You'll be amazed !!

Try downloading and installing Google Accelerator (www.google.com) I have broadband, but a friend of mine still on dial up uses it, and says it helps. Also run virus (www.grisoft.com to get AVG Free, a great program) andSPYWARE (try Adaware) checks to help clean up your computer, make sure nothing there is causing a slow down.

One of the things you can do to help your computer is to keep it clean..Not just outside, go into TOOLS ,then INTERNET OPTIONS and it will say "Delete Files and Delete cookies"..
Click on each one and delete unnecessary files and that helps also...
Go to START then Accessories and DEFRAG.
Otherwise you may need a Computer Technician.
