Start a diary of the child and make notes of everything the child does for a week or two. Take that diary to the doctor and show him what is the normal behavior for this child.

There are a few things you can do. Search the Internet for developmental milestones. If your child is not hitting many of these, that is something you can tell you doctor.

Another assessment tool is the CARS. It is a basic test of your child's abilities. It is then scored, and the higher the score, the more likely "autism".

There are tests for Autism, that a 2-4 year old can take. They just need to been done by someone with expertise. They are non-verbal tests, that can then be used to determine a diagnosis.

The journal idea is not bad either, but you need to be aware of the other conditions at the time your making your observations.

Some include...no reciprocal play, no eye contact, little interest in other activities beyond what they are doing. Repetitive play, no speech. If your child has this symtomology, you need to push your doctor for a referral for a psychological exam.
