Why do people ask if they can ask a stupid question before they ask the stupid question? Because "can I ask a stupid question?" is a stupid question in the first place, so why would you use a stupid question to get permission to ask another stupid question? You may as well have just asked a stupid question in the first place.

Good point. But you should have asked "May I ask a stupid question" instead of "Can I ask a stupid question".

If you ask if you can do something, that implys that you're unsure if you have the ability to acheive that goal.
