My dad told me this when I was young - it still confuses me to this day - does any one have a answer!!!

3 old ladies who live together decide to by a TV at £30 they each give the grandson of one of the ladies £10 each to buy the TV for them. When the boy gets to the store the TV has been reduced to £25. The boy looks at the £5 change and decides that he cant split £5 between 3 fairly so he keeps £2 for himself and gives each old lady £1 back each. The old ladies we very happy as all 3 of them have now only paid £9 each. BUT £3 x £9 = £27 the boy kept £2 where did the extra £1 go????????

Thanks for all your answers!!! I do get it!!! the obvious way the whole 30- 25 = 5- 3 = 2
no missing pound - It was just a bit of fun - its nice to see other peoples opinions of something I found baffling as a kid!!!

This question is asked quite a bit... It's a logic flaw in how you try adding up the numbers.

If you have: 30 - 25 = 5 - 3 = 2

The error:
He owes the old ladies 30
pays 1 back each = 27

He has 2 bucks left which means if he uses that to pay them back, he'll owe 25, the original cost of the TV.

or we can just go ZOMG 27+2 = 29!!!
just imagine it as he gave the 2 randomly to 2 of the women... suddenly getting 30 total seems stupid =)

hehe

You can't try adding up how much Debt there is to get 30 it's impossible since he only borrowed 25.

30-25=5-3=2

This was explained by an accountant to me. 3 times 9 equalls 27 minus the 2 gives 25. 30 is not in the mix as 30 was never actually paid.

Oh my god. I have heard this on ther internet like 3 times and on Yahoo answers like 5 times. But fine i will answer. Each gave $10 (i cant get that sign so i will put dollar sign). That equals $30. It was $25. The $5 left over gets split. 3 goes to the ladies. and 2 goes to the boy. So 25+3+2=30

I'll have to do it with the dollar sign because my laptop doesn't do pound signs. The TV was $25, you can't split 25 between three. But 24 divided by 3 is $8 plus the $1 that they got back was $9. The boy took $2 so the "missing" $ isn't missing it's just that it can't be divided. So they each spent like $9.33. Let me know if you get it.

I keep hearing this story but it's slighly varied. The old ladies actually paid 9.33 each, that's where the missing pound went. But the first time I heard it, it got me too.
