Standard Sign Shapes

Signs convey information to travelers not only by their messages and color, but through their shape as well.

Special shapes are specifically assigned to certain types of signs so that travelers can recognize them quickly and react appropriately.

In general, the greater number of sides on a sign, the more critical a message it conveys. This is why a circular shape was adopted for the Railroad Advance warning sign (i.e. infinite number of sides), as a collision between a train and a typical vehicle will nearly always end badly. Then next the octagon shape is used for the STOP sign, since not noticing that sign typically has unpleasant consequences, and so on down the line. There are of course exceptions to this rule - a pentagonal County Route marker isn't (typically) a greater threat than a standard square route marker, and even though they have only 3 sides, the YIELD and No Passing Zone signs are still rather important (and the pennant shape of the NPZ sign serves as a sort of "get back over on your own side of the road" arrow).

Triangular Road Signs

2016-09-29 05:27:04 · answer #2 · answered by ? 4 · 0 0

Like someone said earlier: not all signs are triangular...

The triangular shape is a shape that stands for a warning. It has 3 'sharp' corners, and therefore is a more 'active' shape than a square.
Squares are used for informational road signs, triangle for warning or to put your attention on something.
Round ones for forbidden/allowed things

All the shapes have been chosen for a reason, but now we just concider it to be obvious what they stand for... Also the coloruse is not coincidence - there's much more to it than first meets the eye...

I feel a tremendous urge to give you a 'sass' answer to this, but I can't think of one, so I'll give ou a serious answer.

Road signs are all different shapes, and colours, so if there is low visibility (like rain or fog) you can tell what type of sign it is, without having to read the words.

Road signs are shaped for easy recognition, even if the writing is worn off. Like the octagon STOP sign, and the triangle YIELD sign.

not all road signs in the US are triangle, different sign shapes have different functions,ie: round is railroad, 8 sided is stop, triangle with corner pointed down is yield, etc.
