I'm trying to settle a bet, I think it is extremely overweight by today's standards.

It depends if it's fat or muscle, if she's muscly 130's not too bad. You shouldn't judge things on today's standards, she should aim for what's healthy, best to get her body mass index and go from there. Her GP will tell her what a healthy weight is.

I'm 5'5" and to be healthy must weigh 119-156, so i doubt she'd even be considered overweight by the doctor. I would aim for the lower end of the scale though, about a half stone over the lower limit allows you give, for illness.

No, she does not need to lose 30lb to be healthy. She is not even overweight and losing more than 30lb will make her underweight. By today's standards, her BMI is 24, which is within the healthy range, if she wanted to lose a few pounds, that is her choice, but losing 30lb is completely unrealistic and unnecessary.

Your bet is stupid and so are you!

If you consider today's standards skeletal. I am 5'0" and about 107 and am underweight - I have muscle because I am active but no fat - my ribs show a bit too much and my face looks too pinched and I don't have as much energy as I should - too thin is not good - I am best around 110.

Weighing by scale is about the worst way to determine obesity. Muscle weighs more. BMI indes is good, and then look. Is there obvious fat? Its fine to see the slight shadow of ribs but you dont want to see them sticking out and you really do not want to see spine or the bones in the arms like you see on some actresses.

according to ivillage.com and the National Institute for Health Standards a healthy weight range for the person you described is 118- 132. So I suppose losing 30 pounds would be a little much.

I think they could lose 10lbs. But I dont think thats heavy at all. Now if she was 5'2" and 150-160 then she should lose 30lbs.

This is not a bad weight for this height... unless its all fat and no muscle... My suggestion is to eat right (take less junk food and such out of diet), exercise (do a lot of cardio and weights!).

If you eat right and work out the feeling is awesome!

30 might be pushing it. They can possibly lose 10-20 and still look good.
