My automatic car has problems getting into top gear, usually when its running from cold, but also at other random times. I have to rev it really high to get it to change up. Lifting off the accelerator doesn't work, as it does with some automatics. Is it expensive to get the sensor changed so that it knows when it should change up a gear? Anybody had a similar experience?

There are a lot of things this could be. I've seen sensors fail on automatic transmissions and have it get stuck in a gear that's too low, and this is a cheap repair, but this may not be the cause. Some transmissions are purely mechanical and don't even have sensors.

Well, first of all, how you know is the sensor, or if that is just a guess? When auto tran act up like that , it usually means that it need to rebuild. I don't believe it had anything to do with the sensor. You lost your top gear now, and if you rev it really high and it shift to netural, and then shift to higher gear, you tanny is done. You have to rebuild it. And it cost a lot of money, I have the same problem with my wife 98 Neon and it cost me 800. So, best advise, save up and take it to a shop. By the way, make sure you take it to a tranny place not Cottman. I take the Neon there and they quote me like 1500 for the same repair. So call around, Or if you know how to work on cars, you could get one use and put it in yourself, it should save you a feww hundreds bucks. Good luck

Well, its not really a "sensor"....
Your first, easiest, and cheapest thing to do would be to run down to the lube place and get your transmission fluid and filter replaced (make sure to get a new filter).
That may do the job for awhile. If however this vehicle is one where you are going to put 50K miles on it in the next couple years or one where you need to be very dependable you will want to have your transmission rebuilt or replaced.... which will cost between $500-$1.5K. It is possible that some could do this themselves.... but judging from your post I would suggest a proffesional.
