The answer kind of depends on how old he is. My vote would be fore:

If we can see the world, we can't go to the land of dreams.

Basicly if you have too much input, your mind can't go to a restfull state of sleep. I know some people can sleep with their eyes open though so I would guess they have some way of tuning out the world w/o covering it up.

Because if we sleep with your eyes open then we will be active with our surrounding and that will not help our body to relax.

Because our eyes would become very dry if we slept with them open and our eyelids also protect from damage when we sleep (like dust and other airborn particles) Hope this helps

We sleep with our eyes shut to protect them from foreign particles that could damage them in the hours we are unconscious.

My guess would be that we don't sleep with our eyes open in order to prevent our eyeballs from drying out

Mostly to block out stimuli which would distract us from sleep, and also to keep foreign objects out of the eyes and to keep them moist so they don't dry out while we sleep. Here's some links... http://www.madsci.org/posts/archives/dec97/877824687.Me.r.html

I think your body is just so relaxed it is impossible physically to keep them open as it would take some awareness and muscular effort to do it!
