To "make sure" you do something does mean not to forget to do it, but it is stronger than just "don't forget". It is more like saying, "Under no circumstance should you forget to do it."
Take all the precautions to be certain you do that something.
A good example would be --"Make sure there is nobody behind
your car when you back out of the driveway."
The meaning here is more one of "being certain" than of remembering.
When you are on your way to school your mother might say to you, "Make sure you bring a sweater. It is going to be cold this afternoon."
