your ears pop so you tell the air steward/stewardess and they give you a sweet? What is the point of that- they do not work, and the last time this happened it took me ages to get it back out of my ear again.

back to the question i nearly fell off ma chair laughing Hun... sweet......in your ear..... ha ha ha ha.

as an answer its the swallowing that equalises the pressure in your ear canal they give you a sweet to suck as saliva is made in the mouth to eat a sweet therefore we must swallow more hopefully easing the ear pain.

Ears pop as the plane adjusts it's cabin pressure to 10,000'. When commercial flights first started they kept their cabins pressured at ground level. Three planes were lost as the high internal pressure burst the skin of the aircraft and they crashed.
10,000' is the compromise not too unpleasant for humans but still safe for planes.
The sweet needs to placed in the mouth, to encourage you to suck. The sucking action stimulates the Eustachian tube that connects the back of the throat to your inner ear. This is needed to adjust the air pressure in your inner ear to match that in the outer ear. Unfortunately this is a very thin tube and for many people it cannot work as fast as the cabin pressure needs to change, resulting in ear ache. It is wise to avoid flying when you have a head cold as the mucous often slows down the Eustachian tube even more.

I think the best way to stop your ears from popping is to plug your nose and breathe out as hard as you can! Make sure you're sitting down though cause it causes a HUGE head rush! Chewing gum also works.

The chewing action is supposed to relieve the pressure in your ears.
Another alternative is a hot towel, put it over your eyes to help equalize your sinus pressure and your ears.

Your ears have difficulty because of the shift in air pressure, you are supposed to SWALLOW and it's upsetting the employee didn't know to tell you this. Maybe s/he misunderstood what you were saying?

your ears all have air ducts connected to your sinuses try holding your nose and blowing with your mouth closed to equalize the pressure
