The only other completely free item, that I know of, is the soccer ball. Go to the academy, to the gym and click on the soccer ball on the gym floor. You will get a message that Coach Danner is going to allow you to take the soccer ball home to practice.

If you score 100 points or more on the Peanut Butter Toast Crunch® Swirl game, you get cereal.
If you score around 1000 points on the Syvie game, you get a sofa.
Go to the Inventor's Expo at Town Hall. Visit all of the exhibits, then Chip's and you will get a box of cereal.
The free soccer ball in the gym only works if you are not currently holding one (if it is not one of the things you can put in your room).
