I've been taking the maximum recommended dose for about five days now (6 tabs in a 24 hr period) and my stomach is a bit painful, could this be caused by the medication?

I had been taking them on an empty stomach and with very little water. I had a mouth infection and even swallowing was agony.

Quite possibly. I don't think you're supposed to take them for more than 5 days is original symptoms persist. Also they're quite strong so you shouldn't really take them on am empty stomach and drink loads of water with them. Ultimately - see your GP!

Yes. Ibuprofen DEFINITELY irritates the stomach and my aunt found this out last year. She had been taking Nurofen Plus a few times a day every day for about ten years because she suffers from pain in her hips and her doctor recommended that she took it at that rate. Then late last year, she was suddenly rushed to hospital with terrible pain in her stomach and it turned out that taking all that ibuprofen had given her a stomach ulcer. Luckly, she is fine now but yes, taking ibuprofen can play havoc. Paracetamol, like Panadol, is known to be gentle on it though.

It very well could be. I always take ibuprofen for my headaches and period pain! I've been doing this for years and recently developed stomach problems. I have to have tests done (i.e. a camera down my throat to see my stomach) as a result of this & i'm convinced it's because of the ibuprofen which i regularly took on an empty stomach.

Yes, definitely it can create problems with your stomach. I don't know which doctor you have visited because they always recommend to take anti-acid or ocid OZ 20 with this type of Medicines.

You should always take Ibuprofen with your meals as they are strong and max. dose is for 3 days but not 5 days.

This medicine should not be taken more than 3 days and with lot of water.

By they way why are you taking Ibuprofen

Some people do have problems taking Ibuprofen, you should always take medication with some food in your stomach and a whole glass of water.

If you keep having these problems go to your doctor and discuss it with them.

Hope you feel better soon

It is possible.
Ibuprofen is best taken with or after food so there is less chance of its side effects, one of which is indigestion.
When you say stomach problems do you mean indigestion, diarrhoea, nausea or vomiting?
The severity of the problem and the symptoms would dictate whether you needed to see your doctor or obtain something just to obtain temporary relief.
Did you obtain them over the counter or from the doctor?
My advice would be to talk to a pharmacist or the doctor and discuss the issue in detail to get the right advice for you.

A lot of people have an intolerance to Ibuprofen tablets, I can't take them because I have IBS and it plays havoc with my system, some people suffer with really bad tummies after taking Ibuprofen, have a word with the pharmacy people at your local chemist they will be able to recommend something better for you.

Thats because you're taking them on an empty stomach. Drink some milk and have a smoothie.
