The easiest and cheapest way is always to add more RAM. Next, I'd clean out excess programs, dump other apps from loading when the system starts (ones that don't need to) and if you're on Windows - defrag. You'd be amazed how much all of this can help.

To be honest, if after all of that you still don't like how your machine performs, then you'll want to just buy a new one. Why? Cause you can get whole systems for very cheap these days and that'll update everything at once. Chances are the machine (even the cheapos) will far outperform something from a few years ago.

Its not clear. It may be as a result of many things.
1. Virus or worm attack - Check for the lattest mcafe antivirus
2. Spyware - Look for antispyware
3. You install more programs. - Look for a higher volume hard drive and you may increase your RAM
4. Large application like Image editor slow your computer down-- then increase your RAM
5. Internet explorer is slow.- Clear the cookies and all offline files in the internet options.
6. The best of all is to use a high speed or high frequecy board mother board. Even, if you use a 2 GIG if RAM with a low speed board, you are just fetching water with a basket.

I would take a look at the following:
Are thier any unused/unwanted applications on your computer?Go to the control panel click add/remove programs, and remove all programs that you dont use regularly

Do you have alot of photos & music on your computer. If so you might consider copying them to a CD & then deleting them, you would save hard-disk space by doing so

GO to Start Programs accessories Systems Tools & then Disk Clean-up. This will free up more disk space for you.

Now its time to Defragment your hard-drive. go to start programs accessories system tools & disk Deframent. This will re-allocate disk space to increase performance of your computer. This could take several hours depending on the size of your hard-drive.

Now lets make sure you dont have any viruses. I would go to google and do a search for AVG anti-virus free edition. It is free & I consider one of the best anti-virus programs! Download, Install & run to make sure you have no nasties on your computer.

If you do all of these, all should be done at least once a month, except avg, your computer should be running well. If not, you will probably have to buy & install more RAM. If this is the case, do another search on google for replacing ram & follow one of the guides out thier, it will save you $60 bucks or so.

Good luck

Backup all the data from your hard drive, then format the hard and re-install the whole system. Windows sometimes get 'tired' of installing and uninstalling programs and then it starts to bug. If you don't know how to do this safely, take your PC to a service - it's a routine thing for them.
