Most CAD applications support and make use of multiple processors, so chances are you'll benefit from the dual-core nature of the Intel chip quite a bit. You may want to double-check your CAD app and see if it can make use of multiple-cores. If it doesn't then you're better off going for the higher performer, which I "believe" if twere just a one-to-one with no multi-core support the AMD 3000 would come out a little on top.

As for gaming, the processor isn't nearly as big a factor as the graphics card you get. The better and more powerful your 3D graphics card is, the better your gameplay will be. Most modern games don't rely too much on the main processor for rendering graphics.

As for motherboards? That's way too many "if thens" to explain here. Overall motherboards that support the chip you choose will run the same. It's not like a motherboard will do much of anything for overall performance. It's the chip, memory, and so on instead.

A lot of people who are WRONG. AMD WAS, yes WAS in fact better, but the Core 2 Duo's are out now, and they are the best. Even better, in a few months the Core 2 Quadro will be out, which will have 4 cores instead of 2. That would be the absolute best, especially for what you want. Not entirely sure on motherboards for the Quadro, but for the Core 2 Duo I suggest Asus as a brand and just find one that says it supports Core 2 Duo.

Dual core will have its advantages if you run software designed to run in multiple processor environments or routinely run multiple applications. With out a second core true multitasking is not possible and windows results to a time sharing arrangement to allow all programs to appear as though they are running concurrently. If you want to run a single application as fast as possible and the program is not designed to utilize multiple cores, which is generally the case, you would definitely be better of with the faster clock speed of the AMD.
