I think it's down to the over-commercialising of Black culture and characteristics. Every facet of Western culture must now recognize and include the afro / black people, whether it is in advertising, music airtime, authourship, business, etc...
Other people groups (besides the Caucasian community) have nowhere near the PR that the Black community has. You could say it's a bit of an identity crisis for Asians. Western culture doesn't give Asian groups anywhere near the same amount of attention and therefore it translates subconsciously that 'To be Asian is not to be trendy or commercial', (unless you are a Bollywood fan of course).
It's similar to the Native Indians (First Nations) people in Canada and the US, they tend to relate to the largest minority group instead of the whites. The way the 'First Nations' young people have started dressing and acting over the last decade or so almost mimics the Black-American cultural characteristics.
I find it a very interesting social phenomenon.

While America has a multiplicity of ethnicities, culture is continuously redefined by exposure to others. As people live, go to school and work together, they learn each others ways. Using your example, many non Asians have adopted things from Asian cultures. For example, 20 years ago, few non Asians, except those who went to Japan knew what sushi was. Now we see sushi bars opening up in markets all over. Asian martial arts, dance, medicine (I go to an acupuncturist on a regular basis) and interior design have become important parts of American Culture in general. I am Black and as a little girl, I remember playing with children down the street. The mother was Japanese and Father was Black. Their home was beautiful and to this day, my preferred mode of design for interiors is Japanese. I do not see this as copycat tactics. I think it is a matter of being a part of American culture where people emulate what they see.

Yes you are correct, strange but I only noticed this myself a short time ago, I always looked upon Asians as very quite and well mannered individuals, and put this down to really good upbringing from their families, (Plus a touch of out dated discipline)!
Some time ago we had racist riots in Birmingham UK not between black and white (why do I feel guilty saying black)? but mainly between black and Asian!
That to me seemed to be the start of this copying thing!
But its not just the Asians, it seems to be catching on with the UK whites as well, I have even seen a few whites with dreadlocks!!
Your question is why?
My guess of course is no better than any ones , but I feel it is some sort of rebellion by the youth of today, not all kids believe whatever they have been taught by their biased parents, Asians and whites have been indoctrinated against blacks for many many years, they have had enough BS and are (unconsciously perhaps) showing a form of solidarity! And at the same time telling their parents to 'get stuffed'!

Asian men have not been the flavor of the month for many women. I personally think they are cute, without them trying to be "ethnic". Most Asian women have been leaving for Black or White men, so maybe the Asian man feels he needs to step up to be the competition a little bit more. I'm not sure...

Fear and respect, he he he he, when I see the usual pretend "Blacks" as you put, it really does make me giggle. The Asians have adopted it because there aint nothin cool about being Asian, well except that you can sell cigs on Christmas day, where as "Blacks" can be super cool, super fly, just look at Shaft or Samuel L Jackson Muhammed Ali etc etc top cool black guys, whereas Ahmed Iqbal Jones from No 42 who now walks with a swagger and has a lowered seat in his go faster Vauxhall Nova with an exhaust the size of a small dustbin aint cool! So why fear em, just have a good laugh at em

Its true but not confined to the asian population, the entire world is adopting black patterns, from the music, popular fashion & advertising. asians do it as a way of relating and fitting in, to what crowd i dont know! some asians are keeping it real...but whats real? ? thats the question
