Affection is the first step towards Love. Love is the culmination of ones emotional, mental, physical, spiritual attachment to another person. Unfortunately the word like is often mis-represented by the word love. Love requires a build up of many years that finally allow for the sublimation of each other's egos and the merging of the two individual psyche's into one dynamic and vibrant whole. Love does not, in itself, allow a partition because that would mean destruction of two individuals.
Like allows the normal meet, mate, cohabit, leave, forget, find another and carry on a cycle of experiences.
Love does not.

(m)

love meaning:
A deep, tender, ineffable feeling of affection and solicitude toward a person, such as that arising from kinship, recognition of attractive qualities, or a sense of underlying oneness

affection meaning:
A tender feeling toward another; fondness

Affection is more of a fondness of someone an early feeling lik before love it's more of an ''action'' it's hard to explain you usually use affection when people are being really close and things, they are showing their affection.

Love is more a feeling two people feel between eachother, a feeling no-one really can explain because it's different for everyone, it's hard to tell it's love but really inside you know it is because you've never experienced this feeling before!

In the first instance, love is natural and affection is unnatural. The former can be explained due to biological reasons or some such things. Affection is for altruistic reasons. Affection does not expect anything in return for the feeling. It is not based any implicit understanding of reciprocity. Love is more often than not based on physical attraction. Affection, as the word suggests, acts on the mind.

Affection is the warm fuzzy feelings and the expression thereof.

Love is much, much deeper--it's going through the horrible times with someone and coming out on the other end together that shows love.

And yes, the two can exist without each other quite easily.

What's common is that both emotions are not well handled generally. Affection can be misunderstood and love too often is confused with passion. Affection should not move a person to irrationality; love can.
