I've only read 'The Alchemist' by Coelho.
I've also read Plato, Aristotle, Kant, St. Augustine, Wittgenstein, Nietzsche, Sartre, etc., Buddhist texts, the Bible, Koran, sections of the Mahabharata, Confucius, Lao Tsu, etc., etc., so I think I have a frame of reference here.
Coelho is a story teller. Not a philosopher.
I've also read Joyce, Proust, Dostoevsky, Nabokov, Dickens, Kerouac, etc...
Coelho is not a world class story teller, either.
The Alchemist was one of those books that I picked up to see what the fuss was about. For the same reason, I also read a Harlequin romance once. I enjoyed the Harlequin romance more. It was funny.
But I admit that I'm a snob about what I read. With tv and movies, I just love dumb action and monsters - when I sit down to read a book, I expect some substance.

Philosophy is the unique academic concern, from the 1st universities of historic Greece, from which all different concern, by way of technology, maths, artwork politics and all different, come from. To have a draw close of philosophy you have a base understanding off all matters. those distinctive discipline's shaped the human history and all of our understanding. So if philosophy is mumbo jumbo then each and every little thing is mumbo jumbo. (and could be all of it is!)

well, i ve read all his books and for me, he had his ups and downs. the alchemist was amazing, very philosophical, a true search in a human's soul, you see the secrets of life revealed to you. veronica decides to die was also a great novel about suicide with a happy ending, the zahir was terrible, i dont see why he wrote it..it was totally mumbo-jumbo! the situations he describes are too '60's when the people used to go around without purpose. these things are history...
in a few words, some of his books are indeed very nice and they deserve all the great critics. this doesnt mean that all his books are equal. and again, thats my opinion...doesnt mean you wouldnt like him or whatever!lol

To me, Paulo Coelho just repeats the same thing over and over agian, to read one or two books of him is fine, afterwards you really get annoyed by his everything-will-be-good prayer. and he doesn't only reapeat himself, no he repeats main phrases that are really old, and once were concerned as philosphy but now worn out. also he states, that if you are being an egoist every thing will turn out to be well... as you can see in the novel veronica want to die (i dont know the english title correctly, sorry). Thats quite a great thing isn't it?

all in all he is just a talented writer with no ideas... or intelligence... to think up a real philosophic topic to write about.

I have about six of his books - given as a present - but I have yet to read them as a good friend told me they were of the mumbo-jumbo variety.

This, therefore, isn't really an answer, but I too would like to know what others think.

Many people do not like writers that sound like they're trying to tell you what to do. I presume it's just a matter of how you experience what they say. I like Coelho, because I find his way of thinking similar to how I would like to think sometimes - he is positive, smart and sensitive and his books are very nice reading.
