and another thing, why dont you see crew members leaning on walls or standing about with their friends chatting/smoking cigarettes/holding a beer?

as for the cleaning the ship does it it's self as a function of life support.
You never saw them leaning on walls because if they did it would fall over ;-).
And as for the smoke and a beer. Well in the future everyone was smart enough to know that smoking would kill you so no body was dumb enough to start. And as for the beer, technically the enterprise was military vessel. In TOS, they only drank on shore leave (trouble with the tribbels). And in TNG (+spin offs) 10 forward/ the mess, often served synthahol (synthetic alcohol) booze with a buzz but no bite.

A1. The Enterprise is cleaned by Tribbles who were bred to be nocturnal. They crawl all over everything eating the debris, but only in the dark so you never see them.
A2. Smoking on Federation starships was banned in 2142. It was outlawed on Earth in 2180.

Seems likely that there are maintinence robots, I vaguely remember seeing one in some episode or another. We don't see people smoking and drinking on the Enterprise for the same reason we don't see them doing so on a naval vessel. People in the halls are on duty or heading to or from duty. Besides I don't think there are a lot of smokers or drinkers in the future..

you see them drinking in the lounge on the enterprise. but as to who cleans- i think its a robot that does it in the middle of the night- a silent robot with a silent vacuum. i want one.. lol
