Sure. At that time slavery existed all around the world- from China to the Americas. There were some initiatives from Christians to ban slavery (as they had already achieved it once in the 13-th century) especially in England (eg. a law stating that any slave seting foot on british soil automatically becomes a free man). Nevertheless stealing people into slavery was very common- especially by pirates on the coasts of Europe in the Mediteranean sea (short distances + high demand in the islamic states). Slave trade from black Africa was at that time mostly towards China and the Maghreb

Also, the only people who could vote were landowners and almost all the old documents are written with some kind of sway. I love shows like that.
