Study: Chimps and Early Humans Interbred
AFP
May 17, 2006 — Our early ancestors interbred with chimpanzees after the two species diverged millions of years ago, new research suggests.
The provocative idea is sketched by U.S. genome experts, who have discovered that hominids and chimps diverged far more recently -- and over a much longer timescale -- than previously thought.
During that period, the authors theorize, the two primate species were rather more than kissing cousins: They had sex, swapping genes before making a final split.
"The (...) analysis revealed big surprises, with major implications for human evolution," said Eric Lander, one of the paper's co-authors and founding director of the Broad Institute, a research collaboration between Harvard University, MIT and the Whitehead Institute.
Until now, the belief was that humans and chimpanzees shared a common ancestor but parted ways around 6.5-7.4 million years ago.

We are the only species currently alive on Earth what can, or have all of, the following:
1. Erect posture (frees the hands)
2. Opposed thumbs
3. The ability to focus our eyes close up and at a distance
4. Analytical brain
5. Commutation by speech and writing.
Although, some other animal can best us at some of these traits, except 5.,we are the only one that can do them all.
This is why I am convinced that of all the species on this planet, Homo Sapiens Sapiens was the best chance to evolve into something worthwhile.

Q: We all know that most animals that run on all fours are quicker. Why do we walk upright all the time? A: Walking upright is a great advantage when it comes to looking imposing to predators, and seeing those predators before they see you. Q:Why did we evolve the ability to see color? To feel love? To enjoy music, poetry? A: The ability to see color is quite handy to discern poionous insect or plants when you don't have an instinctual avoidance of those inedibles. We're not the only animals that see color, either. Love is possibly a genetic misfiring based around genetic predisposition toward certain personalities, albeit a beautiful misfire. Music appeals to a part of the brain, and some other animals respond well to rythmic sounds as well, like whales and dolphins. Poetry is built from language, which is pretty much the basis for any abstract thinking that a super intelligent organism might want to do, so naturally it appeals to us. Q: Can a sense of justice be something that would be needed for survival? A: Absolutely. A species as intelligent as humans that are capable of deception (mostly do to language) have to have some kind of disciplinary measures to ensure the group will not constantly be under threat from a deviant member. Other animals instinctually behave in the way they're supposed to, or they're exiled from the group or even killed. Q: What about a conscience? Do we need that to survive? Or sympathy and empathy? That makes us weaker, not stronger.Friendship. How does that relate to evolution? A: I would have to say that a "consience" is a construct of society, not a genetic inheritance. We need it to survive insofar as we need to work together and agree on certain norms. Sympathy, empathy and friendship are all key to strong communities, which is what has propelled humans to the top of the food chain. Q: How many other animals would actually risk their own life to save one of their own? A: If I can think of just one, will that put the question to rest? An octopus pretty much sacrifices her life after guarding her brood. She is so weakened from starvation, that predators immediately attack and kill her. You conclusion: Seems like those qualities had to be more or less put into us by something or someone. My Rebuttal: Seems like all those qualities are necessary for survival. Evolution is a beautfiul and astounding process. You should actually look into it instead of making uninformed statements.

The reason we evolved is because of the our ancestors' changing needs. Scientists concur that we evolved from apes, and as our needs changed so does our brains which figured out ways to attain them. With that we slowly evolved into
homo sapiens as we know today. Other creatures evolved too, but their evolution was different from ours, they evolved into smarter species of their own kind.
But ,there is always the possibility that one day we may be overturned as the kings of the world, it could come in the form of another species, such as ...say dogs ....who knows?
watched it on discovery, if my facts arent true, then they are just a bucnh of liars....LOL

A better question might be, why hasn't some creature evolved with an even better brain, and without the vestiges of our limbic system interfering with our logical processes?
And your question has no answer except the obvious - that some creature has to be at the top of the scale - so it's not a question of "why is there only one" but of "which one is the only one."

one species didn't evolve. there was a time when there were two 'sentient' species, cro magnon man and neanderthals. neanderthals died out and and the cromags evolved into us. both were very intelligent and had primitive societies.
dont forget about the thumb, and the fact that we live on land. dolphins dont have much luck creating an advanced society seeing as how they can never work with fire. who knows, though

Where did you get that totally unsupported idea about Dophins being more intelligent species than man ??
Why were birds the only animals that evolved to fly ?
Why were snakes the only land animal to evolve without limbs ?
No....No other animals are going to evolve and become humanoid.
Humans are not going to evolve and grow wings so they can fly either....

Given enough time, dolphins may indeed evolve into fully sentient creatures. It has already been demonstrated that they possess at least some level of self-awareness beyond that of other animals.

there were many Homo beings....Homo Erectus was one of the more famus ones...they had a larger brain capacity and were larger in size...Homo Numbrus were smaller and had a more humped back....Homo Grinus were clossest ones to us
the reason that Homo Sapiens took over is they had the most effective reproductive system so there were tons more of them...and they were more agresive than the other Homo beings...so they killed all they other off
GO US!!!!!!!!!
