My daughter has managed to get hold of a permanent marker, in black. She has done me a lovely picture on my cream kitchen unit.
I have tried a few things, but it's not worked.

Isopropyl Alcohol is the solution here, but be careful. Standard "rubbing alcohol", which is 70% isopropyl alcohol, probably will work. However, it does contain ingredients that sooth the skin while rubbing it on, so it could stain finishes. A better bet would be "antiseptic alcohol" which is 90% isopropyl alcohol". You can find it most pharmacies (for about $1 a bottle) as it is what diabetics might use to cleanse a site before taking an insulin injection. Antiseptic alcohol contains no emollients for the skin, but still test a hard to see area first to ensure there is no finish damage.

From an everyday shop WD40. If you can persuade a chemist to sell you a small amount by describing exactly why you want it, then either Isopropyl Alcohol or (top dog) Trichloroethylene but you may have some convincing to do to get that. A small amount of Tric or IA on a cotton swab will do and a very little goes a long way.

Isopropyl alcohol, go buy rubing alcohol and that and a paper towel should take it right off. Hairspray, vodka, and many other things all have some alcohol, but the straight stuff will work best.
Don't use nail polish remover! The acetone can ruin the finish on many things!

Try Surgical Spirit form the chemist or I find the dry cleaning stuff you can buy called "dabitoff" works, it's very fumey though and you need a mask and to fling open all the windows! You can buy it at DIY type stores, places like Wilkinsons or Woolworths.

One of my daughters did the same thing when she was very young. Nail polish remover took it right off. Depending on the surface, you may have to keep using it until you get it really light, then try diluted bleach (if the surface is bleachable).

Spray some aftershave on it. I get marker on the counters at work all the time and aftershave works a treat. Just spray it on, wait a couple of seconds and wipe it away!!

It works believe me.

When I get Sharpie marker on the counter in my lab, I use isopropyl alcohol (isopropanal) 70%. It takes it up right away

Tide laundry detergent works on finger paints, I bet it would work on marker. The Mr. Clean magic eraser is great too.

Use a dry erase marker (erasable) and mark all over where the permanent marker is. It will erase right away.
