Only if all the blacks are chained and enslaved so they can appreciate it because the original slaves must be gone by now, so today's blacks who carry on about being slaves havent experienced it either.

Hi There!
I disagree and I will tell you why I think this, and feel free to comment.
There have been slaves since the beginning of time. Slaves of all races and nations. There were Roman slaves, Viking slaves, Egyptian slaves, African Slaves, and the list goes on. Unless your grandpa was a slave, How does HE know what it was like?
I find slavery abhorrent. I think it is important that we remember it so it does not happen again.
However, saying that being chained and enslaved is what it is to be black is really not a true statement, is it?
Being black is not about being a slave. Being white is not about being a slave owner, being Asian is not about being a Samurai...Do you see where I am going with this?
There is more than one type of slavery. Slavery of the heart, the mind, ect is also a type of slavery. There is addiction, hatred, anger, bitterness...all forms of slavery that we inflict upon ourselves.
Slavery should never be forgotten, it should be studied and learned from. We should ALL, regardless of race, strive to make our world a better place the best that we can. The African chieftains had slaves, then in turn they sold their slaves to the white man to be taken to America. Many more white people were against slavery than were for it and some even helped slaves escape through the underground railroad and championed slave's rights. So, you asked a poignant question. But to agree to it means to say that all black people are slaves. This is not true. Being black is about being a human being...and here's hoping that whatever race we are, we can remember our humanity.
Thanks for this question.

NO, I think this sort of thinking is what is wrong with the world. Nearly every country in the world has a phase where the were once collinised and their identity taken away. But it wasn't any one now, it was their ancestors. Fair enough, be proud of who you are, but come on, black, white, asian, indian, whatever, move on. We are in the year 2006, how long ago was it when slavery went out. I know some people are still racist, but alot of people aren't.
It doesn't matter what nationality you come from just get on with your life.
I'm white, and why should I have to be chained and enslaved to understand what it is liike to be black. I never had a slave and I wouldn't beacuse I disagree with it. And not all black people were slaves.
I don't know what else to say!

Disagree. Your granpa sounds like he's a bit fond of stirring it up a bit and being controversial! Naughty old man. Can I meet him? Tell him it's a ridiculous proposition. I suspect if a white person were to be chained and enslaved and then declare "now I appreciate what it's like to be black" they would either start a riot, get called an idiot get laughed at or all three. Good question.

No, I don't agree.
Slavery was abolished in 1833 in the UK and 1865 in the USA. Are you telling me that your Granpa experienced this? Maybe he should chain himself up so that he can truly understand what it's like to be a slave.
You should also ask him how come there were slaves in the first place. You'll find it's because the Africans were selling their own people into slavery! If what it means to be black is to sell you own people for slavery and then be bitter about it for 100s of years afterwards, I'd really rather not experience it.

I have absolutly no problem whatsoever with any race but please - Tell him to get that big chip off of his shoulder and stop being so stupid - do you see many Indians moaning about the oppressive Raj? Do you get many Englishmen complaining about being invaded by the French? Do you hear much about the Chinese whining about invasion and oppression from the Japanese?
No - Why? Because they get on with it and don't think the world should be forever apologetic for something which affected a relitively small number of people hundreds of years ago.
Ask him if he would be happy to be judged by a white mad he had never met? Or is it a case of do as I say, not as I do?

No I don't agree.
I think all races have had their share of being enslaved, white people just as much as anyone else. I understand that black enslavement has been the most recent, but blacks have enslaved blacks before and done even worse - what about Rwanda - genocide, cutting off peoples hands and arms...
I don't think this is a race issue because blacks have enslaved blacks and white have enslaved whites.

Your Grandad was not a slave & I doubt he was chained up, does he understand what it is to be balck or just read some books and heard some stories?
True it was a bad life back in slavery times but the last 80 years things have changed so much that can no longer be used as a racism tool.
Tell him to loose the chip on his shoulder!

No.
Should black people raid the US and take back ship loads of white people to Aftrica to see whats it like to be white.
Surely black people have far more to offer the world than be defined by slavery ?
Mistakes are made by societies, its not the burdon of current or future generations.
how can granpa have a chip on his shoulder about something that he never know.
It is logical for me to be upset with the Italians because of the Romans ? Its not even worth answering that one.

No, don't agree at all. No black person alive today has been chained and used as slaves (including your grandpa). Second, huge numbers of slaves existed in Europe and probably all white people have ancestors that were once slaves.
