I work for the fire service and we do a home fire safety visit we install smoke alarms that last for ten years. so i would say check the manufacturers instructions.

It seems you've answered your own question there. Just keep changing the batteries and the detector will still be working long after your house has fallen down around you lol.

One connected to the mains,lasts years and years you also purchase a battery one that lasts 10yrs,ring your local fire station and you will get them free.Thay came and fitted two ten year ones for me as i said Free.

they recommend a change of battery once a year but being so cheap and the importance of them wouldn't it be better to change the whole thing once a year life is worth that few pounds or dollars isn't it Dave

Depends on if they are bleeping regularly, there should be a test button to make sure still ok.
