Add vinegar to the wash. I had the same problem, this one pair of vintage jeans I love but they had a moldy smell. Regular washing would not get rid of the smell, but after 1 wash with vinegar the smell substantially improved and 2 washes with vinegar it was gone.

i don't think its a gd idea to try and mix-in a new smell (like perfume) cuz then the combo smell is going to be awful. i don't know how far this will work but u can try it - get some baking soda/bakinh powder/laundry soda and dissolve it in a bowl on water. hang the clothes inside a cupboard and keep the bowl inside the cupboard and make sure u close the cupboard well. check ur clothes after a few days- chances are that the smell wud have reduced or gone. baking soda etc. are very good at absorbing smells

Try Bicarbonate of Soda - this is very good at absorbing smells. Hang garment in a sealed bag with the bicarb (lots) at the bottom. This should remove the smell instead of masking it.

Hang them outside for as long as possible, weather permitting until the smell disappears or use Fabreeze. The first optoin is the most preferable but takes a lot lot longer

Wash as normal and dry, if you can tumble dry the item use a few fabric softener sheets (available in most supermarkets and drugstores) and put them in the dryer.
Sun drying is also great to rid items of musty smells, but you risk fading the colours.
Good luck

whilst i purchase some thing from a thrift shop or classic shop, I hand wash with purely somewhat laundry detergent or bar cleansing soap in chilly water. besides for all of my clothing, I shop a Yankee Candle air freshner on the lower back of my closet.

hang them in the bathroom and turn the shower on hot for a few minutes to steam them slightly, then hang them outside to line dry.
If all else fails, Chanel no 5.

put them out for a few days and it helps if you don't want to wash them you can try drycleaning them too -- some just seem to smell forever though --
