Lipstick does not have a particular origin. However, it is known to have been used around 5000 years ago in ancient Babylon, when semi-precious jewels were crushed and applied to the lips and occasionally around the eyes.

Why?
Probably cave woman/man found out that if they applied vegetable or animal fat to their lips they did not suffer from cracked lips in dry/cold/hot/freezing/windy weather.
Later it was used for cosmetic reason even when it was not needed.
PS
Most male and female use a medicated lipstick in USA that is colourless but has slight flavour and come in different flavour it is called, Chapstick, it prevents chapping of the lips. It also works on already chapped lips.
During 1940 time frame, very few females in India were using lipstick even in big cities.
To-day in cities like Bombay in most offices most girls will have make up and at least light lipstick.

Im sure way back when in the days of old the women in every culture had and wore some kind of makeup.
I think though that the egyptians were most famous for creating and using make up ( especially for the eyes).
Its all in the name of beauty. There really isnt much of a reason I think except for vanity/beauty.

Why not pose that same question at www.ask.com and see what comes up? I do know that back in the days of the Romans, Cleopatra, etc., they used to squeeze cherry or black cherry juice on their lips to color them. It's just after modern technology came along that they came up with a solution to make a tube of lipstick.

i think d egytians were d first people u used makeup particularly lipstik.dey are known 4 being vain and beauty conscious.i've read dat they were also d first 1s who used henna to dye their hair and they also do shaving..
