Why don't you look up the file extension and see what program will open it? check out www.filext.com
Otherwise, what opens it really depends on what kind of file it is - and there's nothing that says just because it's got a certain extension that it MUST be that type of file... I could save a word document with a .zip extension - that wouldn't make it a zip file, it would make it a word document with the wrong extension.

Maybe. Try renaming it to .zip, then using Winzip to extract it. If a zip utility fails, then I'm out of ideas.
Where did you get this file? What context?

Probably your file may be in zip . Or multimediafiles like mpeg,mpg,mp3 etc. Just rename your file with popular extensions and try to open it. Sometimes it may succeed.

What's the extension?.....or when you say 'unknown extension,' you mean that there isn't any?
It could be some sort of DVD image. If this is the case, you'll need a program to burn the image file to a DVD.

Open the file with Notebpad. Usually there is a tag at the beginning of the file which describes its usage.
