During Ramadan it is Faraz(must) for every muslim to fast. The duration of the fast is: from Fazr Azaan to Maghrib Azaan. It is entirely religeous thing, but in some muslim countries it is more of a cultural stuff.
It is very tough when days are long and nights are short.

The month of Ramadan is a Holy time for the Muslim people. The act of fasting teaches us to appreciate what others may not have. It also teaches us not to waste and to be grateful for all the little things that we take for granted such as having a meal 3 times or more a day.
Fasting is a means of discipline and cleansing of the soul as well as our hearts and minds. But, if you are not able to carry out the fasting, Allah will not punish those who are unable to do so. Allah does not want to make our lives tough.
Among the exemptions from fast are pregnant and breastfeeding woman, they can choose to fast but are not obligated. Ill and elderly people to which fasting would make them worse or die. And also those who are unable to understand the Ramadan month such as children and mentally disabled people. It has a lot of meaning behind it.
Ramadan is the month in which Allah gave the Prophet Mohamed (PBUH) the Holy Qu'ran. It may be just fasting to you, but to the whole Islamic nation, it is a sacred act of love, loyalty, and commitment. I hope that this answers your question!

Poverty in my country is increasing every year because of the ecionomy crisis. Fasting, besides a thing that muslims must do, it also to make muslims have an understanding about many people that can't eat and die because of starving. The point is to appreciate what God has given to us until now.

Fasting is based upon a person's religious beleifs.
You can fast in many different ways.
Muslims fast sun up to sun down.
Christianity can fast for dsy or weeks (40 days in ref to Jesus-Moses and noah)
You can fast without any type of food or limit certain foods or drink.
You can fast by not watching tv or going out to eat.
Fasting is the removal/cessation of something that is pleasureable to you for a period of time.
Most people fast for 24 hrs or 3 days.
The purpose of fasting is to submit yourself to God. Draw nearer to him.
Fasting is not done to bribe God--Like Lord I'll fast three days if you just let me get that new JOB>
Fasting is from the heart -bring one closer to will of God.
Fasting should not exclude liquids.
Nor should people with particular medical problems fast--go without eating.
Check with your doctor if any doubts.
Better that they give up that bowling or fishing trip.
Or soda /candy/ice cream ect.

well im a muslim and the purpose of it is very obvious...it is to xperience how it feels to be one of the millions of people who deal with hunger every day of their lives, it allows us to reflect on that and it gives us the opportunity to be grateful to God for giving us food, it also is a month ( ramadan) to purify your soul. it would be good for even non muslims to try it, like today, in my university there was an event called fastathon, and just for one day you can sign up to fast from sunrise to sunset and every person who signs up will get a dollar payed on their behalf to the local food drive, so it was very beneficial, and since im muslim anyways, i signed up and felt good about someone getting a dollar to eat on my behalf, it's the least i could do, we then enjoyed a banquet held by the sponsors of the fastathon. for non muslims to try it, you could fast, and the money that you save on food the day you fast can be donated to a local food drive, you will feel great about doing it. and the fast has nothing to do with the su?n really, it's just the period of time where u cant eat or drink anything till sunset. so basically the point of it is to show appreciation for what sustenance ( food and drink) we get as opposed to those who hardly ever get any food. people who are blessed with food every day only have to worry about...oh what am i going to eat today? people much less fortunate than us think...WHEN is the next time i will get to eat? think about it...

For some people it is religious. Hunger is the strongest drive and if we can control that, than we have controlled all our bodily requirements and are free to connect to God.
For others, it is just healthy. It is good to give rest to your digestive system once a day per week or atleast skip one meal a week.

it's a very long explaination...but i think i can try...
first and foremost..fasting is not just about not eating from dawn to sunset...it strengthens our character...through fasting, we learn to resist temptation and achieve self control...it makes us more disciplined...it increases our will-power and prepares us for sufferings we may have to endure...besides...it is proven good for your health...and you don't really feel the hunger at all throughout the day...it only appears about a couple of hours before break fast...
one more thing...try avoiding this kinda question here in yahoo answers as some non-muslims will take advantage and say bad things about Islam's teachings...if you have questions like this...you're welcome to ask me...
