Marie Claire is my favorite. It has fashion and beauty tips, but also lots of articles on women saving the world and human rights violations. It's the thinking woman's Cosmo.

If the type of magazine you're interested is along the lines of people/cosmo (entertainment, fashion, etc), InStyle is AWESOME! It has tons of style tips, articles on what's going on in the world and in Hollywood, and it's a lot chapter than People... less than $30 if you get a one-year subscription! :) I definitely recommend it!

Marie Claire is good i also recommend Interview. Vanity Fair can be good gets a bit preachy in it's politics.
Elle is good. Real Simple is very good. Alarm is a fairly unknown magazine about underground culture. City is good for fashionistas but is published only 4 times a year. Fervor is also a good choice for recipies and home decor.
One thing my lady friends do is check out magazines written for men my old roommate (female) loved reading Maxim for it's sarcasm and Details.

Along the lines of Cosmo, theres a pretty good one called "Complete Woman," available at Rite-Aid. For celeb and crime gossip, read "The Examiner" and "Globe," sometimes you can find these at the grocery store. You won't be dissapointed.

I've been reading "OK MAgazine" It's not bad. It is along the same lines as People, US, etc.
