Custo Dian's answer that Romania is a post-Soviet Union country is incorrect. Romania was never in the USSR; its Romanian-speaking neighbor, Moldova, was, but not Romania. It did have a communist government under Nicolae Ceaucescu and his predecessors, but for all his faults he actually tried to keep his distance from Moscow's influence, so much so that he actually met with Nixon in the 70's and managed to get Romania "Most Favored" status in the US, at the time. He was overthrown and executed in 1989 in a bloody revolution, and Romania has been moving more and more towards joining its western neighbors since. It recently joined NATO and is soon to join the EU, along with its southern neighbor, Bulgaria.
Romania is a fascinating, beautiful country; its people are hospitable, kind, and intelligent; it has a beautiful language, and a compelling history, which goes far beyond the legends surrounding Vlad Tepes (aka, Dracula) and his murderous exploits with the invading Turks of his time. The Black Sea coast, the Danube delta, the capital of Bucuresti (Bucharest), the Carpathian mountains... the country has a wide variety of things to see and to do, and it's a shame that most people don't bother themselves to learn world history and geography enough to learn anything beyond Romania's name or its connotation to vampires. It's well worth a visit, and deserves more attention.

I did a world country report on Romania a few years back in 9th grade. Really interesting place. If I remember right, they are known for their caviar? The country is one of those Post - Soviet Union countries struggling to recover.
