Depends on the party now doesn't it?
I always like skirts on women. Mid-thigh and shorter.
If that is not the answer you are looking for. Perhaps a backless black dress, or red if you can wear that color.
And once again, dependign on the party .. you may not want to wear something expensive as people may spill on it.

First of all, what sort of party is that?
If it is,
D&D - black flowy knee cap gown with silver/gold high heels
Birthday party - Jeans/blous with slight heels
Water Party - Bikini if you want
But I guess the best is to wear something you are most comfortable in, and suit accordingly, rather than wearing something that does not bring out the character of yours, that will ruin your party whole night.

it depends on the kind of party.
if you're speaking on general terms..
a cocktail dress is good for any occasion. however, if the party is very laid back, just wear whatever you think is comfortable. if there is a specific theme, you can adhere to that theme (ie: 80s theme...wear something that represents or looks like something from the 80s).
