In India, the culture is an old, uninterrupted and eclectic way of living which is synonimous with its history and the faith of the vast majority who did not succumb to the cultural onslaught by the western muslim and the christian rulers. Indianness or Hindutwa is a cultural identity which was sought to be invaded by the foreign rulers, but history bears witness to the fact that the Indian culture remained victorious. The Indian christians and the Indian muslims are different from their counterparts which is proved when India is at war with Pakistan and there is election and political parties have sought the minority votes by woing their religious sentiments.

'Vande Mataram' is the song which united the whole nation during the freedom movement. It is by sheer logic that the land where one is born and brought up is just like mother who has reared the child by its resources. And hence, the song in praise of the mother-land should not be opposed on basis of ones religious faith. If the Maulavis are trying to give it a communal colour, it should be opposed tooth and nail by the educated lot. It is praise worthy that this time large number of Burkha clad muslim women were among those who publicly celebrated the 'Vande Mataram' centenary. But it was a matter of great shame for the section of some political parties like the CPI(M) and the Congress who were trying to appease the minority vote bank by telling that it is not compulsory for them. Love for the nation has to be voluntary, and absence of it is grossly criminal and anti-nationalistic. One can not be compelled to love one's nation. Either you love or you betray. There is no third alternative.

Well, the obvious answer could be that they are not as much Indians as they are Muslims. But that would be a sweeping statement not quite justified by the totality of facts. For instance, lives sacrificed to defend the country in wars against Pakistan.

The real reason may well be their Resistance against those who are trying to make the country a Hindu Rashtra. No matter what their numbers, they are a minority and hence suffer from a sense of insecurity. The onus is on the majority community to allay their fears and bring them into the mainstream - not exploit them in the vote game. How many of Hindu employers offer them a job ? In the absence of equal opportunities in the job market, they turn to low level self employment or lowly criminal activities. Even education is not equally open to them. Economics and education are the only means to lift them above the narrow and closed circuit of religious fervor.
Let us face it. More than 50% of them wouldn't even know what Vande Mataram is. Just because the Mullah says not right, the populace merely echoes the same. It is the Mullahs who are opposing and they have their position and power to defend, and it actually suits them if the populace suffers in education and economics and clings more and more to religious fervor.
