Assuming you're in the US - you file for unemployment in the state in which you were unemployed. Most cities have a "government services center" where you file. You will have to provide information about your former employer, and reasons for your termination, to prove eligibility. In Kentucky, for example, an employer can contest your eligibility if you were terminated for "cause," that is you were stealing or something like that.

Your benefits will be based on your previous 4 quarters of income, and whether you are married, and how many children you have. Don't expect more than a few hundred a week, even if you were making 1 million a year.

You will also have to show proof that you are looking for work. This probably can be done electronically, depending on your state, and will involve contacting a minimum number of employers in your field each week.

The biggest downside to unemployment is that, while they don't withhold payroll taxes, you will still be liable for them at the end of the year, so keep those stubs and try to put aside a bit while you are unemployed.

Good luck!

You need to spend your time building a resume and go on a serious job hunt. Apply to every single place of business in your area and look presentable when you do it.

It all depends on how much you made in the previous 4 quarters..
