Actually, a twist jar lid is an inclinded plane wrapped around a cylinder. We call it a "screw" but it's simpler than that.

The inclination of the two opposing planes allows you to "tighten" or "loosen" the jar top by twisting in different directions. The planes interlock, causing the lid to be pressed against the lip of the jar as you twist.
