Yes it is dependable provided you know how to interpret it and understand it correctly.
Your description of Bhagvad Gita's significance is too less.
What it does not have ?
Practical Philosophy of life for both types individuals both worldly people and sages.
It also explains :
What is Yoga ?
What is Gnana Yoga ?

Bhagwat gita is considered to a dialouge between Srikrishn and Arjun.
It is touches each and every aspect of human life. When one talks of life it must be of complxities. Take an ex of a woman she is a child , daughter, wife and MOTHER ....... and all other relations within and outside the family....
hence every where the level of discussion ,talks , relations must be at a definate degree. In absence of this the humanity ,the humanhood ,will be in danger. The beasty nature will prevail hence hte guiding force must be there that is provided by Gita.

Books are good for inspiration but not to base your choices on, those should come from your instinct or your intuition.
When we follow a book madly, we become book fanatics; we might start quoting its verses every now and then, instead of making our own life quotable.
That is why; the wise never base their life solely on some text, no matter how enlightened it might seem to you.
After all it is only written by humans, and human beings by design are supposed to err, not just to stay human but to learn thereof.
So let’s learn from our mistakes and the choices we can make thereafter.
Our life has enough material to create a book; After all God co-wrote the book we call life, with us; we just need time, patience and devotion to read this book of our life, and that itself can take us far beyond our any imagination and also destiny.
So first Read Thy Self; and you would be surprise how much you can learn from your own life, more than what any book can show you. Good books make good guides, but the best guide resides within us all. We just need to relax and listen to it, close.

Once upon a time , it was very dependable. But for the modern mind, it has very little use, other than seeking confirmation, after experiencing it first.
The kind of total surrender it demands , for it to work , seems too improbable for the today's minds !

As "dependable" as any other religious "guide", like the Koran, Bible, etc., no more and no less. They're ALL just "prescriptions for behavior" that some people believe in...and a lot more don't!
