Is there something I need to do (some computer language setting)to allow those Russian words to go through in their original/correct spelling (in Russian alphabet), so the girl in Russia will understand it? The Russian letters all/most turn into vowel-like letters with stress marks over them.

Before you start typing in Russian, you have to change encoding to Cyrillic (how - depends on a specific e-mail program or browser you're using, so you have to find it yourself or give information about your mailer program). Usual coding schemes are Cyrillic KOI-8 and Cyrillic Win-1251. Try KOI-8 first and ask your correspondent in Russia, whether she could read it.

And here is a link to a site helping to decode the strange message: http://www.2cyr.com/decode/?lang=en
