6 is the least common factor ( 2 and 3 go into it evenly) .
1/2 is equal to 3/6 and 2/3 is equal to 4/6. I see your problem...
If we try 12
1/2 is equal to 6/12 and 2/3 is equal to 8/12. And the number inbetween is 7/12!

The word rational in this context is related to the word ratio. A rational number can be expressed as some fraction, even if it's 1/1. An irrational number is something like pi, that can't be expressed as an exact fraction. It just goes on for ever.
1/2 = 6/12 and 2/3 = 8/12 so 7/12 would be a rational number in between 1/2 and 2/3. The actual number of possible correct answers to your question is infinite.

Legion suggests one way:
(1/2 + 2/3) / 2 = (6/12 + 8/12) /2 = (14/12) /2 = 7/12
Alternatively, you can use the pictorial way, draw a square with a unit-length strip across the top divided in the rows below into fractions e.g. two halves, three thirds, four quarters etc. so you can visually pic off a fraction that is > 1/2 and < 2/3.
For example: 4/7 , 5/8 or 5/9 are all good...
