MAGIC!
different animals have different sensory systems...
birds may tune into the earths magnetic feild and sense magnetic resonance.
other animals hear or sense vibrations much more percisely them humans.
it depends on the type of natural disaster..
if you look at the biology of each specific animal, and how that may affect their behavior, you can also take into account all the animals they interact with ect.. like a domino effect.
Animals are often more "intune" with nature, because they don't do much else, meanwhile many humans are out of the current time frame, thinking about yesterday tommorow or even fiction.
I could explain in more detail but it would be very lengthy and each disaster has different natural warning signs.
The easy answer, is - that is how they are made, that is how they are.

They are more in tune with nature than most humans. We are constantly worrying about petty things like what's on TV and whether the girlfriend or boyfriend will call.
Animals are out in the wild. They need to SURVIVE so they'll use a large part of their brain power constantly looking, listening, and feeling for dangers that lurk.
If humans clear their mind and totally trust our instincts we can do these things too. For instance, I can tell when a large storm is coming this way when there is hardly dark cloud in the sky. I can feel the pressure that I've felt so many times before when storms are coming. One can say this is pattern recognitiion but you still have to be intine to feel it.
Hope this helps.

they are much more intune with smell, and hearing... also animals can be very intuitive and 'sense things'.
Many people don't believe in ghosts or the spirit world, but i have two animal stories that freaked me out, when i saw nothing...

I think it is for self preservation, they have an extra sense that helps them sense change in the atmosphere etc. We use instruments, animals use their senses.
