Independence is the ultimate goal of a revolution. Thus, there is a need to declare freedom after winning the war.

the declaration of independence wasn't a declaration of independence per say, but it was a literally an explanation of the resolution that was passed by congress at the time. it was necessary, for one to proclaim separation from great britain. i'm sure the people who came up with the declaration didn't know what it would become (ie, what people later have invented what it was about and what it meant). So i guess back then it was really basic: "we're an autonomous country, leave us alone. Other european nations, please recognize this, and support us."

It was to unify the colonies and codify what we were rebelling against.

Also, it was a point of no return. By writing something down and putting a signature to it, the signers were committing treason in the eyes of the King. (That is why many of the signatures you see on it today weren't added until several months or years later). This committed those who did sign to the fight, because if they lost, they would likely lose everything, including their lives.

Doing so helped to rally others to the cause. It honestly declared our intentions, helping us to sort it out sooner with the British colonial authorities.

If I want to achieve something, I need to share it with the community, if it's a political goal. Publishing the declaration helped us to focus, gave us a document to gather around, something on which to base our identity as a nation.

So that the middle class white male land owners could make laws to govern their country. A government that would disallow most, not all, black men from voting for nearly another hundred yrs. and women longer. Gee, if we looked at who signrd the DoI, it was signed by middle class white male land owners. and this is different from a dictatorship how?
