Classical literature is very good but to understand the works one must be very good at the language. One must also forget about slang. Usage is different. Poetic and narrative skills manifest more than an easily understood story. Clasical literature is for scholars by scholars and of scholars. Enlightenment version is for all those who are just literate and aims at entertainment all the while supplying stories.

The enlightenment paid attention to the individual. Liberty, Equality, Brotherhood and all that. I'd imagine that the literature of the enlightenment would stress these themes. Classical literature would stress prototypical characters. The Hero, the ruler, the merchant would look the same as all the others of their type. The enlightenment would stress more individuality. I always sort of thought that idea happened late for literature in the period that we consider the Enlightenment. Certainly 18th century fiction was still quite classical in its themes. While Jefferson, Paine, Franklin and even the French were into political enlightenment, fiction was still quite structured. Later, 19th century we start seeing more modern literature.
